THEN & NOW
Then:
Lamplighter Montessori School was founded in 1967 by Dennis and Dr. Patty Calvert to offer a quality Montessori educational option to the Memphis community. Originally located in Whitehaven, the school opened several satellite locations throughout the Memphis area. The school was privately owned until 1990 when it began operating as a not-for-profit organization. Land was purchased in Cordova to consolidate all locations into one united school. In 2004 our current school was built on over nine secluded, wooded acres in the heart of Cordova "the town" to provide a non-sectarian, co-educational Montessori program.
Now:
For over 55 years, Lamplighter Montessori School (affectionately known as "Lamplighter") has provided a quality Montessori education to mid-south families. Today our school enrolls over 120 students, 18 mo - 15 years of age, Toddler through Middle School. Our rich tapestry of families from around the world means our student body is 50% caucasian and 50% globally diverse. Lamplighter Montessori School admits students of any race, color, creed, or national or ethnic origin to all programs and activities available to students and does not discriminate in the administration of its educational policies and programs.
Lamplighter Montessori School earned accreditations from the
American Montessori Society (AMS)
, the
Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS)
and
Cognia [formerly Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)].
We are also an active member of the Memphis Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). The Department of Education for the state of Tennessee provides regulatory oversight. Lamplighter Montessori School is the only regionally accredited, independent AMS Montessori school in the Mid-South.
The school colors are blue and green. The school mascot is the Owl.
